In this episode, we head to Beowa National Park. to uncover the lesser-known stories behind one of Australia’s most infamous colonial figures, Benjamin Boyd- whose dicey legacy is literally etched into the landscape.
We explore a life of ambition, influence, and wealth—and the human cost that history has often left unrecorded. From the lives of South Sea Islanders coerced into labor to the whitwashing of history in museums and memoirs, we uncover the shadows behind celebrated landmarks and heroic myths.
Walking through these lands and waters, we reflect on how history is shaped by those in power, the tension between kindness and self-interest, and why understanding the full truth of our past helps us make sense of the world we inherit.
Join us as we listen to the echoes of the forgotten and confront the legacies that still ripple across Eden and Beowa National Park today.
Benjamin Boyd (1796–1851) was a Scottish-born entrepreneur and colonial figure who became a prominent, yet controversial, presence in 19th-century Australia. He amassed wealth through banking, pastoral ventures, and shipping, establishing settlements such as Boydtown near Eden. Boyd is known for his ambitious projects, including wharves, towers, and extensive grazing lands, but his legacy is marred by exploitation—particularly the coerced labor of South Sea Islanders and the violent displacement of Indigenous communities. Boyd died under mysterious circumstances on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, and his life continues to evoke discussion about ambition, power, and the ethics of colonial history.
